Clothing

How do people in China say "hoodie"? It's been bugging me for a while - I've heard/seen various phrases based on "连帽...", whether it's 连帽上衣, 连帽外套 (which I think refers to a coat rather than sweater), 连帽衫, or similar. Does anyone know which one people actually use? :)

卫衣 or 帽衫 will work ^^

Thanks! I think 帽衫 is what I was looking for. I've added it to Skritter's dictionary, so if anyone disagrees or has a suggestion they can alter it there.

On the same note.... what about underwear?! It's not a question I can ask my 中文老师! Google and MDBG suggest 短衬裤, 衩, 内裤 and so on. What's commonly used in China?

Byzanti   October 1st, 2011 6:15p.m.

内裤 is most used. And it seems a perfectly reasonable question to ask your Chinese teacher!

As far as I know 内裤 is the most common word for underwear :P, not idea about hoddies though

Thanks! :)

I have never heard 内裤。 I have only heard 内衣. Then again, in English we have a lot of terms for underwear, so I suspect they do as well.

Byzanti   October 2nd, 2011 3:59p.m.

Actually, good point, now I'm not sure which one I've been using any more.

One of the best ways to find out how a word is used is to image search it however.

It would seem both are acceptable :p. It also looks like 内裤 is just the bottom bit, where as 内衣 is both. That also matches up with my dictionary. The dictionary also says 内衣 includes vests (British usage of the word, can't remember what Americans call them).

@ Byzanti
I just looked it up in my electronic dictionary. It says the same thing.

内裤: 贴身穿的单裤 briefs; panties; underpants

内衣: 指衬衣, 衬裤等贴身穿的的衣服 underwear; undergarment

Also, vests (British) are called undershirts in the US.

Thanks a lot! That makes it a bit easier to understand. :)
