HP pad thing

thedrunkingpig   October 11th, 2011 6:34a.m.

i got a HP touch pad (cheap as im on a tight budget). i think its possibly an S8 model.its a chinese model and everything is in chinese.

ive the software installed, it can move the mouse no problem, but not the button click.

writing shows the character overlapping the screen. it doesnt move the mouse in the flash box (writing pad). if i write a character, the writing pad turns red like ive made a mistake.

how can i get it to work properly? im desperate to use it. even with simple characters like 1, it shows up as a mistake.

any advice?

i found that if i hold the mouse button down, it will work.

but this isnt really practical.

:(

Hi thedrunkingpig,

Can you describe more about how it looks with "the character overlapping the screen"? I'm not sure what's going on from your description, but it sounds like the HP Touchpad handles mouse events in a way that may make this not work.

Also, try going here to see if the behavior is any different:

the alternative didnt work im afraid.

when i write, the skritter pad changes to red to show i make a mistake. then it will change to green when i write a second time.

the overlapping basically shows the strokes/lines on the screen. but over the whole screen. not within a certain area. the whole screen is the canvas.

Wow, this sounds really weird. Is it possible for you take a screenshot/photo to show me? You can email it to nick@skr..ter.com.

:)

cant take a screen shot of it. it wont be captured. i think i read that the writing wont affect the integrity of the file. i guess this includes screen shots

when i write, i think the strokes are interpreted by the software, and changed to an ascii code or utf8 code. i can write and the character is inserted into whatever word processing package im using.

Can you turn that off? Skritter needs the mouse input to do its recognition--it can't perform recognition on random text input, which is all it would get from that driver.

hmm ok.

think i might look to change.

do you have any ideas how good the wacom CTT-460 is?
i cant find any reviews on it.

thanks for your help nick

If my search is correct, that's the touch-only version. You don't want that, as it's not very accurate. You would want the pen-only version.

Are you looking for a cheap writing/graphics tablet? Where are you located?

thedrunkingpig   October 12th, 2011 7:05p.m.

in in china. ive been looking on taobao.com there seem to be a wide range of pads, but unsure which one is decent or suitable.

nick   October 12th, 2011 10:16p.m.

Ah, that's always a challenge, as there are so many Chinese models, but many do have that problem of having built-in CJK handwriting recognizers blocking the mouse input.

This is another example of one that works well, but I don't think you'll find it specifically on taobao:

Congrats, man. The Wacom is going to make the writing awesome for you, I think. Make sure to configure it with these settings for Skritter:
