Skritter 2.1.0 in the App Store

nick   January 18th, 2013 12:18p.m.

This update fixes many, many bugs, most notably a problem with adding words during advanced study where the new words wouldn't show up (and sometimes would just keep adding). I can't even remember all the bugs we fixed, but yeah; go grab it:

http://www.skritter.com/appstore/zh (Chinese)
http://www.skritter.com/appstore/ja (Japanese)

After you update, we'd love it if you'd update your App Store / iTunes review of Skritter to point to the latest version, 'cause otherwise it doesn't really show up.

Another change we made in this version is to allow new users to start studying on Skritter, with lists and everything, before making an account. They can then name their account later when they want to sign up or change settings. Hopefully, this will be more friendly for people wanting to check it out beyond the tutorial.

This update doesn't have the example sentences in yet--we need to test them a while longer on the website first--but the next one will, oh yes!

For some reason I was expecting "single list study in offline mode" to be part of this new version. Must have misunderstood something.

Unprovincial   January 18th, 2013 6:32p.m.

Hi Nick,

Great update! How does the single study mode really work? Let's assume I have already done all my reviews for today. I now want to study one particular list only. I get, however, the notification that I have to add words by clicking the plus button. I thought I can study single lists independently no matter how many reviews are due in the main study list. Cheers!

nick   January 18th, 2013 6:37p.m.

mw, offline single-list study is indeed part of this update--it should work as long as you have downloaded the lists once by navigating to the Advanced Study lists chooser screen with internet on. After that, it'll use the cached lists.

Unprovincial, do you have any words added from the list that you tried? It sounds like it couldn't find anything to study and wanted you to add some words.

ali   January 18th, 2013 6:46p.m.

I am using the iPhone app on an iPad so I can continue to have a small writing area. Presumably I should not upgrade? Or is this an iPhone upgrade too and if upgrade will I avoid being automatically diverted to the large screen version?

Unprovincial   January 18th, 2013 6:58p.m.

I have not explicitly added any words with that new list that I have never studied before. Do I manually have to hit the add button for that? I have to admit that my current setting is on the manual mode indeed. But after I've gotten the notification, the screen disappeared immediately without me being able to hit the add-words button and I ended up with the main screen.

learninglife   January 18th, 2013 10:33p.m.

do i have to install the app totally new from the app store or is the update (by keeping the original app installed) just as good?

i use the iphone 5 and havent seen any changes.

the writing area is still not expanded to the new screen size.

nick   January 18th, 2013 10:53p.m.

ali, if you want to keep the small writing area on your iPad, you should not upgrade until and unless we specifically mention adding a small writing area for iPad.

Unprovincial, if it's not giving you the choice to add any words manually before kicking you back to the main screen, you might want to turn auto-adding on so you can get a few words into circulation from that list. (Afterward, you can turn it back off and go manual.)

learninglife j.h., an update is fine. The writing area remains as a square fixed to the bottom of the screen for the iPhone 5, because Chinese characters fit in a square (well, a circle inscribed in the square). The iPhone 5 just gives us more room above in the top prompt area, so it can fit longer definitions and mnemonics and such, as well as the iOS status bar. Not sure what you'd expect in terms of expanding the writing area for the taller screen.

Bodin   January 19th, 2013 2:19a.m.

I really, really like fixing the horizontal part of the big iPad area!
Thanks!

Unprovincial   January 19th, 2013 6:51a.m.

Hey Nick, switching to automatically adding words now works with in the advanced study mode. It's great! One thing I've noticed. I was checking my study lists when I heard the sound of a word being added even though I was not studying anything. Do you know what happened here? Thank! Adrian

PS: Also, from the ipad, I cannot write Posts anymore, it tells me to set up my account and when I want to do that, my user name is not recognised.

R28C   January 19th, 2013 8:08a.m.

I am still seeing the same problem with single list study. I go to advance study, load up a single list (mine happens to consist of about 20 or so 2 to 3 character words), study for a few rounds, and then it doesn't load the next word. I tried deleting and reloading all my local data, no difference. The activity icon is constantly spinning.

My add frequency is set to normal and I saw "Characters in Words" was off. I turned it on, but saw no difference. Help!

Altaira   January 19th, 2013 12:26p.m.

Does the new update give the black theme option on the iPad? That is what I am waiting for.

nick   January 19th, 2013 1:19p.m.

Unprovincial, it's weird that the forum would ask you to log in. Is it giving you the iPad layout on the forum? It's possible that shortly after leaving the study screen, it's still trying to load words and decides it needs to add one, so you could get one added a few moments after leaving it.

R28C, which list is this? I'll check it out.

Altaira, we will not be implementing the dark theme for the iPad, as it's too much work.

zhangyanglu   January 19th, 2013 1:26p.m.

Any news on the sync problems?

R28C   January 19th, 2013 1:51p.m.

It's the one I labeled MDBG. I am on an iPad Mini. I'm also not sure why I can't post from the app's help section neither. Tapping the box does not bring up my keyboard. I don't get any error message though, I just can't type in the box for some strange reason.

Altaira   January 20th, 2013 12:59p.m.

OK then, I guess I'll stop waiting for the dark theme for the iPad.

Here is another question: which version does the iPad mini use? The iPhone or the iPad? I might get a mini if it comes out with a Retina display.

nick   January 20th, 2013 3:27p.m.

zhangyanglu, we haven't been able to track down the last of the sync problems, but as far as we know, most "sync mismatches" shown in the sync status are very minor by this point.

R28C, I'm not exactly sure what's going on, but you apparently have studied all the words in that list very well, so it probably has to do with there not being enough left to study. I know sometimes you want to cram some list mercilessly, but perhaps until we get this figured out, you can do some reviews that are actually due--I think you might not have this problem then.

One other thing to try would be to do the advanced study on that list in airplane mode and see if it's any better.

The iPad mini uses the iPad layout, so it doesn't have the dark theme, either.

Altaira   January 21st, 2013 11:54a.m.

Thanks for the ipad mini info, Nick.
