character definitions not being added

GrandPoohBlah   October 2nd, 2011 5:48p.m.

According to Progress > Totals, I have added around 1300 words and characters. Definitions, Tones, Pronunciation, and Writing added for both Words and Characters are all around 1300 according to the chart, except for Character Definitions, of which I have only added around 800. Why is this? Since the very first day of using Skritter I have always had Definitions turned on; furthermore, Word Definitions added are around 1300; I see no reason why I should have added fewer Character Definitions. Are the progress statistics inaccurate? If that's unlikely, then why aren't Character Definitions being added at the same rate as other components?

Character definitions are not incremented unless you study them specifically. Basically, when you study a word, you learn each character's writing, reading, and tone, but not their individual definitions (ie, you can't break up a word definition into individual words and automatically get the definitions for each character). So learning a word's definition does not automatically net you the character definitions. Does that make sense?

If you want to learn definitions (and every other part as well) on the individual level, you'll want to enable "Also Add Characters When Adding Words" in the study settings page.

Ah. I see. That makes sense. Thanks.
