Livescribe Smartpen on Skritter

HuangKe   October 1st, 2011 5:14p.m.

Hey guys,

Have you ever tested a Livescribe Smartpen with Skritter? I have one lying around that I'd love to try out, if I can figure out the right combination of apps and controls to make it work. I'll try to figure it out and report on results, but if you have any hints, please share.

Thanks!

I don't remember if someone has tested that one. Does it give you a mouse cursor? I tested a similar IOGear pen a long time ago, but the drivers for that were too terrible to live.

If you can get a mouse cursor out of it, and if it can move the mouse cursor while hovering over the page and then perform mousedowns/dragging actions while you're pressing down, then it should be able to work. Let me know how it goes!

OK, I got it to work, but it's not great.

I had to install the Paper Tablet app for $15 from the Livescribe store (note that this only works on the Echo pen or higher, and may not work on a Mac).

With this installed, I followed the instructions, and it works like it's supposed to. You can use the smartpen and paper much like I assume a Wacom tablet works. As long as the tip of the pen is close to the paper, it will move the cursor around the page, then when the tip hits the paper, it will click. It draws just fine on the Skritter page.

The problem is that the Livescribe pens are still tethered by a USB cable. So, you have the cable attached to the back of your pen, making it a little clunky (and the pen is pretty heavy on its own). Maybe with a lot of practice I would get used to this, but right now, it's no better than using my mouse.

So, it works, but not ideally.

Ah, sorry to hear that it's not totally sweet. I appreciate the field report!
