Beginner lost in Skritter

dagann   February 24th, 2011 5:09p.m.

Hello.
1st of all, sorry for my awkward english.
So i'm beginning with Skritter, and there are many things i do not understand.I only figured out how to create my own vocab lists.
Here are my questions :
1/ In account>study settings, i checked the box of "Also Add Characters When Adding Words".
but i do not get new characters when i add words in my "vocab list" "made by me"

2/ What are the "queue" and "my words" compared to the lists made my me ?

3/ How works the "study". I really do not get it. How can i add my lists or words to the "study" so i can take advantage of the spaced repetition for a long term study?

Thx ;)

@dagann Welcome, and don't worry about your English! There are a lot of other users whose first language isn't English.

1: You will get those characters added gradually when you study words. This doesn't happen all at once, but happens over time as you study. For example, if you start by studying 你好, the system will add 你 and 好 to study, but they won't come up right away.

2. "my words" is everything you are studying or have ever studied, regardless of which list it came from. The "queue" is a list of word and characters that you want the system to add to your items under study; as you study, items are added from the queue and from all your active lists. On the other hand, if you create custom lists, those are treated just like textbook lists; if you activate them, words will be added from them while you study.

3. There are several ways to do it, but the recommended way is to pick one or more lists that you want to study, and click "Study List". That will activate the list, so as you study, words will be added from that list. Then, every time you log in to Skritter, you can go to Study and you'll see that list on the study page. Unless you have a good reason to focus on one specific list, it's best to always "Study Everything" because then you get the scheduled reviews for anything you've ever studied.

Thx for your welcome and your help jww1066.

1/What do you mean by activating lists ?

2/About adding words from lists in order to study them:
Do i go in the list and click "study section" or do i clik the "study custom list" button at left of the list ?

3/ How can i know which words or which lists are in my study schedule ?

4/ How can i remove words or list from my study schedule ?

Skritter seems to be a so great and powerful tool.
But as a beginner, it does not seem to be very intuitive.
Are there any tutorials (videos, pdf,..) to help newcomers ?

@dagann my pleasure.

1: You can go to the list you would like to study - for example, http://www.skritter.com/vocab/list?list=agVza3JpdHIWCxINVm9jYWJMaXN0SW5mbxjF0s0SDA - and click on the "Study Textbook" button. (If it's a custom list, the button instead says "Study Custom List"). Once you do that, the list is activated and you don't need to do anything other than go to the main study page.

2. "Study Custom List" is better. "Study Section" should only be used in some very specific circumstances.

3. If you go to the Study page it should tell you what lists you're adding from. You can go to "My Words" to see everything you've already added. http://www.skritter.com/vocab/mywords

4. You can remove a list and all its characters/words by going to the study page and clicking on the "x" at the far right, next to the bit that says "stop adding" or "restart adding" or "finished". You can remove individual characters/words by clicking on the magnifying glass when you're actually studying that word, or by going to "My Words" and finding the item, then clicking on it. In the word popup you should see red "-" buttons to remove the writing, pinyin, definition, and tone.

A video explaining how it all works sounds like a very very good idea.

1. If you want to use a list to add words, you click the study button. This is what James means by activating the list. He just means studying it.

2. In a list there are different sections. If you just want to study one section you can click "study section". However, if you want to study the whole list click... Oh. It seems the different types of lists now have different names*. So if the list is from Chinesepod it will say "Study Chinesepod list", and if it's a list you or someone else has created it will say "Study custom list". It just means study the whole list from the start.

3. Any words you add from lists or the queue will be ones you study, and come up when you practise. You can see these on the "my words" page.

4. To remove words you can either delete them when practising (click the magnifying glass icon, then press the - to remove the parts of the word you don't want to study. If they are show as green +'s then the word will be deleted. Yeah, this is stupid. But they've said they're going to add a proper delete button). You can also do this on the "my words" page. First find the word and then click the characters, then do as explained above.

* Nick, I think "Study" / "Study list" would do...

Yeah, we're going to work on the word popup design so adding/deleting parts is clearer. We're also going to make a bunch of documentation. We may or may not add screencasts; we're undecided.

I've changed it from "Study Custom List" to "Study List", and that'll go up sometime soon. Thanks for the suggestion.

jww1066 and Byzanti, thx a lot for your help.

So i deleted all the words in my study list from "my words" cause it seems i did it in the wrong way.

Currently, i have a custom list with 8 sections.
I decided to study the 8th section (i already study it a few day ago before deleting all the words "in my words").
So i clicked the left green button "study custom list" and selected section 8.

In the "study" page, i see under the "Adding Words From" (added automatically)the name of my custom list and a bar with 2 green colors.
But the words from the 8th section from my list were not added.
I have 0 items to study.

So i click on the 8th section of my list which is supposed to be added and were brought in my custom list.
Under the left green button "study custom list", i now see the bar with 2 green colors and "88.9% complete" written on it.
At the right of the 8th section, there is now a green square and "Adding" written on it.

But no words were added to the study section.

I feel a little bored cause i was supposed to study my chinese and in fact, i spend my time trying to figure how work the "Study".

Nick, can't wait the documentation, it would ber very helpful.
I think it would be better with screenshots cause with only a text help, there is always a difference between the tutorial and the reality.

nick   March 8th, 2011 5:34p.m.

dagann, it looks like it did add section 8 of that list. It waits until you actually start studying to gradually add the words. The completion was 88.9% because you were 7/8 of the way through the list, counting by section. I guess that's pretty confusing, but it would be too slow to count by how many words have been done.

To go to the beginning of the list again and get the first words, go here, click "study settings", and set yourself back to add from the first section:
http://www.skritter.com/vocab/list?list=agVza3JpdHIWCxINVm9jYWJMaXN0SW5mbxjT7KMkDA
Then as you study, words will be added gradually.

Working on the documentation presently. Not too much longer!

dagann   March 9th, 2011 5:41p.m.

Thx for your help and the incoming documentation :)
Can't wait to read it...

Now it says 100% since it seems i have reviewed all the words of the 8th section (but not the other 7 sections).

With sections in a list, can is choose the order i will study the different sections ?
For example,section 8, then section 9, section 7, etc...

scott   March 9th, 2011 5:53p.m.

I'm working on a new list system, which will do better at showing your percentage done, and will always show 0% when you first start a list. Hopefully this new setup will solve a lot of this sort of confusion!

There are two ways you could change the order of the sections added: you could set the study settings every time you want to start working on a different section, or you could reorder the list itself in the way you want. I'd suggest the latter, that will be easier. Open the edit sections popup (the button is above the sections list on the list page) and use the drag and drop (the dots on the left side of each row) to move the sections around. Then start on the first one.
